Accelerating biodiversity loss is a major environmental problem everywhere on Earth, and is one of the leading crises currently facing the planet. The destruction and degradation of natural ecosystems is the primary cause of declining global biodiversity (Haddad et al., 2015). Habitat degradation is often tied to urban expansion and land use change for agriculture or resource extraction. However, road infrastructure has significant ecological, social, and economic impacts as well. For instance, roads tend to split up animal habitats, which in turn increases the likelihood of wildlife-vehicle collisions. This leads to corresponding increases in wildlife mortality, human injuries, and property damage (Green Infrastructure Toolkit Outline, 2021).
